Our Lady of the Rocks and Njeguši tour begins with a scenic drive around the Bay of Kotor. A short boat ride leads to Our Lady of the Rocks, a manmade island built in the 15th century. Legend has it that two brothers from Perast discovered a painting of Our Lady. Locals piled rocks around the site and built a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. This tour will take you inside the island’s church and museum. You will also learn about Fasinada, the annual custom of sinking rocks that expands the island each year.
Return to the mainland and stroll around Perast. Though it is known today as one of the quietest towns along the Bay of Kotor, it was once a bustling port. Perast is a historic sailors’ town with narrow streets and Baroque palaces. Visitors can explore the famous stone houses and captains’ mansions, which stand testament to the wealth and power of Perast.
After experiencing the Bay of Kotor from the water, enjoy a panoramic drive to Njeguši, a traditional village between Cetinje and Kotor. Njeguši is located in the territory of old Montenegro. It is where the rulers of the Petrovic dynasty were born. During the Ottoman period, the only road connecting Cetinje and Kotor passed through Njegusi, making it a centre for history and tradition.
A light lunch of local products including smoked ham, cheese, and grape brandy will be served at Kod Pera na Bukovicu, a 136-year-old restaurant in Njeguši. Members of the family-run restaurant will also give a tour of the smokehouse, explaining the traditional process of smoking ham.
The road between Njeguši and Kotor was constructed in the late 19th century. The route descends from 1,100m to 0m in 25 serpentines. It offers various stunning views of the sparkling Bay of Kotor and the quaint Old Town of Kotor.
Experience Montenegrin history, culture, and cuisine with this tour of Our Lady of the Rocks, Perast, and Njeguši. This tour includes local food and beverage tasting at the oldest restaurant in Montenegro.
